It’s a shame that you have to pick a Mafia Wars character type before you get a chance to play Mafia Wars, because you don’t know how it will impact your capacity to level up.  Once you’ve done the Mafia Wars character choice, it is a done deal.  When Mafia Wars was first released, you could alter character type in exchange for reward points, but that option got dropped from the game.

You hear reports about Zynga bringing that Mafia Wars character change option back, yet so far no deal.  Although I’m amazed Zynga doesn’t reintroduce the character change option, because they could rake in tons of Godfather points.  Loads of Mafia Wars addicts would love to buy another character type.  It’s not like Zynga to leave money on the table.

Looks like for the time being you are stucks with the character that you chose when you were a noob without any Mafia Wars strategy for leveling.  You had 3 options for Mafia Wars character:

Mogul
Maniac
Fearless

Each character type enjoys one character stat benefit, a top mafia spot specially intended for them, and a come-and-go power.  These are the character break downs so you understand the Mafia Wars leveling controversy that follows.

Mafia Wars Mogul Character
Major benefit: Gets the sixty minute take every 54 minutes.
Top Mafia position: Bagman
Bonus power: If you are promoted into Bagman in another’s mafia, you sometimes earn 2xs the money on jobs

Character: Mafia Wars Maniac
Primary benefit: Energy returns at one point every three minutes, rather than 1 point every five
Top Mafia spot: Button Man
Intermittent power: A Maniac in the Button man spot can win a percentage of fights he or she initiates even though outgunned, outmanned, and outclassed by the defender.

Character: Fearless
Major benefit: Health rebuilds more quickly – one point every 2 minutes rather than one every three.
Top Mafia position: Wheelman
Come-and-go Power: As Wheelman in another’s crew, a Fearless character will be able to complete some jobs without inputing any energy.

Many Mafia Wars strategists agree that the Mogul character doesn’t assist a player to level up more quickly in job-based leveling.  Sure, earning the extra 144 minutes of “take” every twenty four hours is sweet for cash flow.  Being a Mogul character is a real advantage in the lower levels while a Mafia Wars player is struggling with income and upkeep.  But whether you are a Mogul or not, odds are you’ll master the money objective pretty quickly in the game.  So a Mogul’s primary advantage will be a bit useless after level thirty or so.

Even with Mogul eliminated, there is tons of disagreement about whether Fearless or Maniac is the better character for Mafia Wars strategy in speed leveling.  Read the following blurbs to get a feel for how the arguments go:

Arguments in Favor of Maniac

Speed leveling is all about energy, and Maniac is the character with the fastest energy regeneration.  In Mafia Wars, you can’t ever have too much energy.  While the Maniac’s come-and-go power isn’t as awesome as it seems because you won’t pick fights you can’t win once you understand fight strategy, recovering your energy quickly is so critical to leveling quickly that it outweighs any other aspect of character.  Therefore, the Maniac character is the one to pick when you want the quickest leveling possible.

The Pro Fearless Character Position

If you want to level quickly, choose a Fearless character.  Although the main benefit to being Fearless – more rapid health recovery – doesn’t exactly thrill Mafia Wars players, the bonus power of no energy cost jobs means that you will get a giant advantage in speed leveling.  The leveling strategy only works if someone puts you into their top mafia Wheelman spot, which can be a hard sell since your character may be inexperienced.  As a Wheelman, you will complete 6-11% of your jobs done with paying any energy points.  Leveling up while in Wheelman will go much faster.  When the jobs start consuming more energy as you advance into the higher tiers, the Fearless intermittent power gets more meaningful.  And Fearless’ faster health refills actually are pretty useful after level thirty-five because the fightlist in Cuba tends to use up your health faster, and who wants to shell out for hospital recovery with pesos?

What is the superior character pick for Mafia Wars leveling strategy?  Assuming you can get into the Wheelman position in someone’s crew, I say Fearless is going to level fastest for you.  Either character will get you to the top spot, but what the debates emphasize is one prime Mafia Wars strategy point.  The most essential element of Mafia Wars when you want to level up quickly is energy managment.  Clearly, Mafia Wars leveling hinges on maximizing your energy.

The bad news is that you are stuck with the Mafia Wars character you selected on that first day.  Improving your energy strategy will escalate your Mafia Wars leveling no matter what character you are!  Another choice – why not open a Facebook profile just for a Fearless character to test out your new Mafia Wars strategy plan?  A new Fearless character would benefit from promotion into top mafia Wheelman and receive gifts from your existing character, as well!  The danger is getting further hooked on Mafia Wars and opening profile after profile so you can experiment with the different character types and leveling strategy arguments yourself.
